Silken Laumann

Silken Laumann

Olympic Athlete and Active-kids Advocate

"In ten weeks she made the greatest comeback in sports history, becoming a symbol of hope to us all."
The Montreal Gazette

Silken Laumann is best known to Canadians as the athlete who suffered a devastating injury just weeks before the 1992 Barcelona games, and then went on to win the Bronze Medal for Canada.  Silken Laumann has captured the hearts of a nation with her story of determination and her warm and friendly presence. We know her as a medalist from 3 Olympics; as the 2-time winner of the Canadian Female Athlete of the Year award; as the recipient of the Lou Marsh award in 1992 as Canada’s top athlete and as the winner of the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award in 1997 – the first time the award went to a non-American.

Silken travels the world to speak to people about finding their own courage and striving to reach their full potential.

She also leads a not for profit organization called Silken’s ActiveKids Movement; a social movement with a mission to get our kids off the couch, away from the computer screen and into the parks and gyms for unstructured play.  Silken’s ActiveKids Movement works to inspire and connect a neighbourhood network to give our kids healthier and happier childhoods.

Silken Laumann is a bestselling author who now spends more time writing than rowing and has written for the Globe & Mail, Chatelaine, Today’s Parent, Parents Canada and Canadian Health and Lifestyle magazines. Her book, Child’s Play, became a national bookseller last spring and is about re-discovering the joy of play in our families.

Silken is an active member of the International Board of Directors for the Right To Play, an international development agency dedicated to reintroducing play into the lives of children in refugee camps around the world.

In November 2006, The Globe & Mail named Silken to their 2006 list of Canada’s most Influential Women.
