A Vancouver company’s environmental technology has gained a powerful supporter, as Robert Kennedy Jr. has joined its board of directors. Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies takes sewage sludge liquids and removes pollutants such as phosphorous and ammonia. It then recycles them into fertilizer.
Kennedy says there are no obstacles to widespread use of the technology. “They can go to a town and say ‘You have no capital outlay, we will install our equipment for free, we will remove all of your phosphorous, then we’ll sell the phosphorous as a very high quality fertilizer, and give you a revenue stream’.”
Kennedy is part of a venture capital company that has put money into Ostara’s technology, which was developed at UBC. It’s in use at a commercial-scale plant in Edmonton.
