By Andrew Winston, Posted March 1st, 2010

The following was originally published on the Harvard Business Online.

Every year, major sporting events get greener and the goals for renewable energy use, carbon-neutrality, or zero-waste get tougher. The Vancouver Olympics which just ended featured a large range of greening activities; the sustainability staff worked on them for years, producing sustainability reports as far back as 2007. In their bids for the 2016 Olympics, not only did Chicago describe its games as “low-carbon”, but Tokyo actually claimed its event would be carbon-negative. As a special advisor to U.S. Soccer’s bid for the FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022, I can tell you that there will be some tough goals in place for that event as well, should we win the bid. (more…)

The foremost environmentalist in Canada, and a man who has gained international recognition in the fight against global warming, David Suzuki received more first-place rankings than the second and third places combined.

When asked his thoughts about placing first, Suzuki displayed the trademark humility that no doubt helped him take the top spot. “I am flabbergasted,” he said. “It is an enormous responsibility to live up to that trust. It is a tribute to the integrity of The Nature of Things and the CBC, which has stuck by me when there were calls for my head when we did shows on logging, economics, mega-dams, etc.” .

The other speakers that we represent that made the list are Stephen Lewis, Ron MacLean and Roberta Bondar.

Robert Kennedy Jr. joins board of Vancouver environmental technology company
Filed under: Environment — Tags: , — prospeakers.com @ 1:05 pm

A Vancouver company’s environmental technology has gained a powerful supporter, as Robert Kennedy Jr. has joined its board of directors. Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies takes sewage sludge liquids and removes pollutants such as phosphorous and ammonia. It then recycles them into fertilizer.

Kennedy says there are no obstacles to widespread use of the technology. “They can go to a town and say ‘You have no capital outlay, we will install our equipment for free, we will remove all of your phosphorous, then we’ll sell the phosphorous as a very high quality fertilizer, and give you a revenue stream’.”

Kennedy is part of a venture capital company that has put money into Ostara’s technology, which was developed at UBC. It’s in use at a commercial-scale plant in Edmonton.
